Why a panel gets replaced in the first place

Most residential panel upgrades in Ardmore start with something small. A homeowner adds a window unit and the breaker starts tripping every August afternoon. A hot tub goes in and the existing panel does not have room for a new double pole breaker. Sometimes it is simpler than that: the panel is thirty or forty years old, built for a house that never had central air, a garage full of tools, or an electric range, and it has been running past what it was ever sized for.

The panel itself usually shows it before anyone calls an electrician. Breakers that will not reset cleanly, a faint buzz when the AC compressor kicks on, warmth on the cover plate, or a burning smell that comes and goes. None of those are things to wait out. A panel that is struggling is a panel that is arcing somewhere it should not be.

The load calculation comes before any parts get ordered

Before anything gets torn out, the job starts with a walk of the house and a load calculation. That means tallying every existing circuit, then adding in whatever new demand is driving the upgrade: a heat pump, an EV charger, a hot tub, an electric range. The result is a number in amps, and that number decides whether the house needs a 100 amp panel, a 150, or a 200 amp load center like the ones we install most often in Ardmore homes.

It is also when the electrician looks at how power actually enters the house, whether it is an overhead service drop to a weatherhead or an underground lateral, because that changes how much of the job happens outside versus inside.

Pulling the old panel and landing the new one

The utility has to coordinate the power down before the old enclosure comes off the wall, since the top of a panel stays live even with every breaker switched off. Once it is de-energized, the old can comes out, the new one gets mounted, and the real work starts: landing the main lugs, running each circuit into its new breaker, and dressing the conductors so the inside of the panel is something an inspector, or a future electrician, can actually read at a glance.

Grounding and bonding get checked here too. Ground rods get tested for a solid connection to earth, and on a sub-panel specifically, the neutral and ground bars have to stay separated the way they are supposed to, unlike in the main panel where they are bonded together.

  • Every circuit labeled on the door, not just numbered
  • Breaker sizes that match the wire gauge feeding them
  • Lugs torqued to the panel manufacturer's spec, not just snugged down
  • A ground bar with every conductor landed individually, no doubling up

Inspection before the cover goes back on

Panel work gets permitted and inspected before it is considered finished, and that is a good thing. It is a second set of eyes confirming everything is landed the way it should be before the cover plate goes back on and the panel disappears into the wall for another twenty years. What the day itself looks like

A straightforward panel swap is usually a one day job. Power goes off for a few hours while the old panel comes out and the new one gets landed, then it comes back on and every circuit gets tested before anyone leaves. If the service entrance itself needs attention, that can add time, but you will know that going in, not find out halfway through.
